PVC adhesive tapes enhance the flight performance of gliders Coroplast in the world of gliding

Gliding through the air at 250 km/h

When up above the clouds, high-tech and quality need to go hand in hand. And technological developments in the world of gliding are advancing rapidly, too. Whereas 50 years ago, gliders were able to fly up to 35 kilometres from a height of one kilometre, these days they manage over 60 kilometres from the same height – reaching top speeds of up to 250 km/h in the process.

In order to achieve optimum power utilisation, state-of-the-art adhesive tapes are frequently the materials of choice and Coroplast reliably partners the sport of gliding in Germany with its tried-and-tested products.

When it comes to gliding, state-of-the-art adhesive tapes are a decisive factor in achieving maximum performance.

„Nowadays, modern gliders are high-tech pieces of equipment and components such as adhesive tapes in particular are crucial for the quality.“
Vincenzo La Bella (passionate glider pilot from Munich)

Why do you need adhesive tapes in gliders?

Only the optimal airstream guarantees a glider’s best performance and makes it possible to get the maximum benefit from the ultra-modern aerofoils and their surfaces. This is where cutting-edge adhesive tape technology comes in, as special serrated tapes force smooth currents to become turbulent airstreams at the right point in order to reduce air resistance. Particularly thin, special-purpose tapes bridge over the transitions from the wings to the rudders, which are constantly in motion. And in order to bond the joints between the fuselage and the wings, extra-flexible, elastic and definitely white adhesive tapes are called for, such as Coroplast 302.

Extremely durable

The material needs to meet very high standards. Apart from the high speeds, the temperature differences play a major role, too. Although the aircraft leaves the ground at temperatures between 10 °C and 30 °C, once in the air they can fluctuate between –50 °C and +30 °C, thus adding thermal stress to the mechanical. With its extensive range of technical adhesive tapes, Coroplast has ideal solutions for sophisticated applications in the world of gliding.

Preparing for take-off: the glider can only achieve optimum flight performance if all of the joints and gaps have been carefully bonded.
PVC adhesive tapes made by Coroplast are used in a great many gliders.
