New centre of expertise for adhesive tape

With a grand official opening ceremony, on 23 May 2014, our adhesive tape manufacturing centre was opened at our Wuppertal site. The centre of expertise is part of an international investment programme with which we intend to further develop our leading role in the development of innovative technical adhesive tapes.

A family matter – Natalie Mekelburger (chair of the executive board) and her sister Constanze Krieger (marketing & communications manager) welcomed the state secretary of the state of North Rhine Westphalia, Franz-Josef Lersch-Mense, and mayor of Wuppertal, Peter Jung.

"Coroplast is growing – and to be able to successfully manage our growth we need the appropriate capacity and the correct technology. With our Tape Town – which is its internal name – we have now achieved this in our home location of Wuppertal," explained Natalie Mekelburger, chair of the executive board, on the occasion of the grand opening. The event was also attended by Peter Jung, mayor of the city of Wuppertal, and Franz-Josef Lersch-Mense, state secretary and executive of the state chancellery in the state government of North Rhine Westphalia.

The centrepiece of the new building is what is known in the company jargon as the "BPH" – a self-developed adhesive tape coating system. This stands out thanks to its variability and flexibility. "It is the biggest system in our company history so far," highlights Natalie Mekelburger. "All the experience that we have gathered over several decades in adhesive tape technology as well as Coroplast's focused engineering expertise has flowed into it."

Including the planned extension measures, we are investing a total of 35 million Euros in the building and the machines. In the new building, which offers 9,000 square meters of space over six storeys, Coroplast has also optimised its goods flows: the production-related materials which were previously partially stored outside the works site, are now stored in a high-bay storage system in the immediate proximity of the machine. Thanks to intelligent conveying technology they can be rapidly brought into the production process. Furthermore, the adhesive tape developers, the sales and marketing team and the quality control team are all now in immediate vicinity of each other.

A mix between a Unimog and a racing car

Marcus Söhngen, deputy chair of the executive board and business division manager of the technical adhesive tape division, described the new system as being "a mix between a Unimog and a racing car: Designed for eternity and as versatile as a Unimog – and yet with a superb performance at the same time. The BPH will enable us to respond to the market trends over the years to come with flexibility."
To create additional resources for our international growth and to guarantee short transport routes to our customers we are investing in the company's foreign locations at the same time. "Coroplast is naturally a hidden champion – as well as being a global player“, says Natalie Mekelburger. The company is currently developing new production sites in Poland, China, Tunisia and the USA.
